My Journey to Make Portage Even Better
Hello, wonderful supporters of positive change! I'm Nicole Miller, and I'm on a journey that's deeply rooted in my love for Portage. This city is where I've laughed, learned, and grown – and now, I'm dedicated to giving back to the community that's given me so much.
My History
I was born right here at Bronson Hospital in 1985. In high school, I participated in the KRESA’s program Allied Health, an Education for Employment (EFE) program. I live in the Lake Center Area of Portage, just a handful of houses down from where I grew up. I’ve been married to my husband Ryan for 16 years and we have one senior cat, Tinkerbell (18).
My education began in the Portage Public School District (Lake Center, Portage Central Middle and Portage Central High School), where I wasn't just a student; I was a proud participant in bread lift, cheerleading, marching band, and track and field. These experiences ignited my passion for community engagement, a flame that still burns brightly today.
My secondary educational journey led me to Western Michigan University, where I achieved a Bachelor's Degree in Community Health Education, followed by an Associate’s Degree from Kellogg Community College as a Physical Therapist Assistant. This was more than just academics – it was about understanding how I could contribute to the well-being of those around me. During my time working on my Community Health Education degree, I worked for grant-funded projects locally and worldwide. I was able to work alongside experts to create initiatives that truly made a difference, especially for the underserved population via Prevention Works and WIC.
Community Involvement:
I'm proud to have been appointed to serve on the Kalamazoo County Aeronautics Board of Trustees for seven years, driven by a commitment to community service and a desire to make sure that the airport is meeting the leisure traveler’s needs. I have served on the Community Relations/Marketing Committee for the Kalamazoo County Aeronautics Board as well as the Air Service Committee where I championed air service that would benefit the citizens of the surrounding area from a leisure travel standpoint. There was a huge step forward in meeting this need when Avelo came to the Kalamazoo Airport in the fall of 2022 with direct service to the Orlando International Airport.
Before my appointment to the Board, I was involved with the Airport Community Outreach Committee where I assisted in helping develop the airport’s first and subsequent Air Fair community events. Interacting with the community is a vital part of any business and it was rewarding to help the Airport staff bring this community-centric event to life.

Achievements, Hobbies and Interests
I enjoy participating in 5K, 10K, and half-marathon events, embodying my determination to compete and have fun. In 2023, I was recognized as the runner-up for the Upward Bound Rockstar Advisor Under 40 by TravelAge West's Trendsetter Awards. This honor celebrates my contributions to building community, expanding education, and supporting my travel advisor colleagues. I also enjoy traveling and exploring new places and interacting with new people.
Professional Background
I also embarked on a journey of healing as a Physical Therapist Assistant. Witnessing the transformative power of empathy, humor, enthusiasm, and collaboration, I knew that these qualities were essential for building bridges and fostering unity.
In 2009, I founded Travel With Nikki, a travel agency with a mission: to turn dreams into cherished memories. This endeavor isn’t just about planning trips; it is about helping people create moments that will stay with them forever. It's been an honor to be part of these journeys, and the spirit of empowerment carries forward into my political campaign. I invite you to visit my agency’s website to see the many positive comments from satisfied travelers there.
Vision for our Community
Now, as I step into the race for Portage City Council, I'm driven by a passion to see our city flourish. As one of the youngest of your councilpersons, I will bring a fresh, new view to the Council. With a focus on responsible growth, green spaces, and transparent communication – all encapsulated in the vision of New Momentum uniting Portage – I'm dedicated to creating an even brighter future for us all.
I envision a community where funds are creatively positioned to launch programs that uplift and benefit residents of Portage. I will celebrate and support small businesses that contribute to Portage's diversity and vitality that makes our city unique.
This journey isn't about me; it's about us, the incredible community that makes Portage shine. Portage wouldn’t be what it is now without you, and all of the citizens that call this amazing spot of the earth home. Together, we can build a city that we're even prouder to call home, where collaboration, compassion, and progress are the cornerstones.
